Windows and doors are such integral parts of the home that they can have a profound effect on the look and feel they create.

  • Should you choose aluminium or timber?
  • What type of window or door do you need - double hung, sliding, awning, hinged or bi-fold?
  • What type of glass is best suited for you?
  • Should you consider energy efficiency or sound insulation?
  •  Have you considered options such as locks, screens and decorative bars?

Choosing Your Product
Principles for selection and placement of windows from the standpoints of daylight, ventilation, view and appearance. Irrespective of the guidelines, the final sizes and location of any window must conform to the building code for any specific area and the Building Act By-Law will govern all such decisions.

  Ventilation
The number, size and placement of ventilation openings are all-important elements in planning windows for ventilation. The effectiveness of windows in achieving desired ventilation depends also on which windows are opening and how far they are opened.

View
Being able to see out through windows is as important to occupants of a house as is the admission of daylight and air.

Appearance
While windows must first be selected, sized and located to satisfy interior requirements, minor adjustments in size and/or location may be necessary to provide an acceptable appearance on the exterior of the house.

  Design
In planning for windows, consider the use of large glass areas not only in the living room but also in any room of the house that can benefit from increased daylight, view, or heat gain from the sun.

Glass Options
The different glasses can make your home more comfortable and energy efficient all year round, improving safety and security, and reducing sunglare, noise and the fading of furnishings.

Selecting Your Windows
Many factors, including cost, location, house design.
